The Black Lit Foundation grew from the work of Black Lit Bookfair, a social enterprise created to center Black books, writers, artists, and readers. Through bookselling, community events, youth workshops, and Black Lit Fest, Black Lit Bookfair demonstrated how economic activity could help sustain cultural preservation and community investment, reinvesting more than $12,000 into Cincinnati’s Black cultural arts ecosystem during its first 18 months.
The Foundation is the next step in that vision. It expands this work through nonprofit programming designed to connect more Black people with literature, nurture a love of reading, increase access to books by Black authors, and build bridges between literature and the broader creative arts.
I founded Black Lit from a lifelong love of reading and a deep belief that books preserve culture, strengthen community, and imagine new possibilities. What began as a social enterprise grew into a bookstore, a literary festival, community programs, and now the Black Lit Foundation.
The Foundation allows us to carry this vision forward with greater intention and reach. My hope is that everything we create helps people envison literature as a living source of joy, connection, creativity, and collective power.
